DRUG SEIZURES UP, SITUATION EXPECTED TO WORSEN
The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) seized approximately $7.7 million worth of drugs in the first half of 2011, which is about $1.8 million more compared to the same period of 2010. Other than ‘Ecstasy’ and ketamine, the other major drug types saw increased seizures.
Compared to the first-half of 2010, there was a 20% increase, or 285 persons increase in the number of drug abusers arrested in the first half of 2011. CNB expects the full year arrest numbers to similarly show an increase.
Heroin and methamphetamine continue to be the top two drugs of choice, with heroin and
methamphetamine abusers making up approximately 91% of all drug abusers arrested.
