Man Arrested for Suspected Drug-related Offences and Voluntarily Causing Hurt to Deter a Public Servant from the Discharge of his Duty

        A 28-year-old Singaporean man was arrested on 5 July 2023 for suspected drug-related offences and for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty.

2.        On 5 July 2023 at about 6.40pm, the Police responded to a call for assistance at a residential unit along Jalan Binchang. The man put up a violent struggle to resist arrest, and necessary force was used to subdue him. A police officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest. A search was conducted by the Police in the unit, and approximately 450g of ‘Ice’, 2,229g of cannabis, 71g of capsules containing crystalline-like substances, 258g of ‘Ecstasy’ tablets, 81 Erimin-5 tablets, 89 LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) stamps and drug paraphernalia were seized. CNB officers were subsequently called to the scene, and the case was referred to CNB for further investigations. The total amount of drugs seized have an estimated street value of $173,000, and the ‘Ice’ and cannabis seized can feed the addiction of about 580 abusers for a week.

3.        The man will be charged in court on 7 July 2023 for his suspected drug-related offences. Under Section 5 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, it is an offence for a person, on his or her own behalf, or on behalf of any other person, whether or not that other person is in Singapore, to traffic in a controlled drug, offer to traffic in a controlled drug; or to do or offer to do any act preparatory to or for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug. If a person is found guilty of trafficking 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis, he or she may face the mandatory death penalty.

4.        Police investigations are ongoing for the offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code 1871. The Home Team has zero tolerance towards such acts of violence towards public servants who are carrying out their duties, and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who endanger the safety of our officers.
