Lighting Up for a Drug-Free Singapore

      The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) held the DrugFreeSG Pop-Up and DrugFreeSG Light-Up today in solidarity with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls annually on 26 June. On this day, the world comes together to acknowledge the harms of drugs and drug abuse, and pledges to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

2.     At the DrugFreeSG Pop-Up[1] held at Suntec City, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State for the Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development, pledged his support for a drug-free Singapore by placing an anti-drug ribbon into an interactive pledging mechanism. The DrugFreeSG Pop-Up, which is organised as part of the annual Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign (ADAC), aims to educate members of the public on the dangers of drug abuse and rally support for the anti-drug cause. The Pop-Up features two immersive rooms that showcase educational content on the dangers of drug abuse and simulate the negative effects of drugs through multi-sensory experiences. 

3.         The DrugFreeSG Light-Up saw Singapore’s iconic buildings and structures illuminated in green and/or white from 7.30pm to 12 midnight. This is the fifth year that CNB has organised the DrugFreeSG Light-Up, which is also part of the ADAC. The DrugFreeSG Light-Up symbolises our community partners’ strong support for the anti-drug cause. Green and white, symbolising ‘Health’, ‘Vitality’ and ‘Strength’, are the colours of the Anti-Drug Ribbon[2] , a symbol of the anti-drug cause and Singapore’s united stand against drugs. There are a total of 35 participating partners this year, including eight community partners participating for the first time[3] . 

4.         Members of public are also invited to visit an ongoing anti-drug exhibition at Yishun Public Library till 3 July 2022, where visitors can stand to win exclusive collectibles. A series of online activities, including a DrugFreeSG Sticker Pack contest where the most creative entries can stand to win a pair of AirPods (3rd generation), has also been planned. THE GREEN AND WHITE “ANTI-DRUG RIBBON”

Colours of the ribbon signify
Health, Vitality and Strength

Domestically

First introduced during the launch of the 1996 National Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign – “Stay Clear – Drug Abuse Causes Permanent Damage to Your Body and Mind” organised under the banner of the National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA).

Internationally

Officially adopted in 2015 as the anti-drug abuse symbol at the Asia-Pacific Forum Against Drug (APFAD). It was later adopted as the symbol for preventive drug education and campaigns throughout ASEAN to spread a common message among youth and communities to be resilient against drug abuse at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD) in 2016.
