Lighting up together for a Drug-free Singapore

The annual DrugFreeSG Light-Up on 26 June is Singapore’s way of pledging our nation’s support for a drug-free world. 2024 marks the seventh year that the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has organised this initiative, bringing the community together to show their support for the drug-free cause.

Various buildings and structures in Singapore, including iconic ones in the Marina Bay area, were once again illuminated in green or white, the colours of the Anti-Drug Ribbon¹ which have also been adopted by ASEAN member countries as a symbol of the anti-drug movement. The DrugFreeSG Light-Up this year took place from 7.30pm to midnight.

3. In all, 48 partners participated this year, including six new partners supporting the DrugFreeSG Light-Up with their visible pledges for the first time². The Ministry of Communications and Information, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, the Ministry of Education and the People’s Association, who are members of the Inter-Ministry Committee (IMC) on Drug Prevention for Youths, also lit up their headquarters or affiliated buildings in support of a drug-free Singapore. The IMC was set up in August 2023 to develop a whole-of-Government response to combat the drug problem among our youth. SMRT – CNB’s partner since last year – had shown their support as well by lighting up Raffles Place MRT station again, and six MRT depot entrances in green for the first time this year.

4. This year, we invited members of the public to join in the DrugFreeSG Light-Up by lighting up their windows with the green fairy lights in the giveaway packs from the Drug Victims Remembrance Day roving exhibitions. To learn more about the exhibition currently roving through various locations in Singapore until 21 July 2024, you may visit go.gov.sg/rday2024microsite. Visitors are encouraged to submit their promises to be drug-free on-site and show solidarity in our fight against drugs.

Domestically

First introduced during the launch of the 1996 National Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign – “Stay Clear – Drug Abuse Causes Permanent Damage to Your Body and Mind” organised under the banner of the National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA).

Internationally

Officially adopted in 2015 as the anti-drug abuse symbol at the Asia-Pacific Forum Against Drug (APFAD). It was later adopted as the symbol for preventive drug education and campaigns throughout ASEAN to spread a common message among youth and communities to be resilient against drug abuse at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Drug Matters (AMMD) in 2016.
