Man wanted for drug trafficking in Singapore arrested in Malaysia; returns to Singapore to face charges

A 56-year-old Singaporean man has been arrested by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on 16 April 2023 for suspected drug trafficking.
2. An arrest warrant was issued for him for his suspected involvement in supplying drugs to associates in Singapore for their subsequent trafficking and sale in Singapore.
3. His involvement was uncovered during the course of CNB’s investigation into a drug trafficking case in October 2020. The accused in that case, a Singaporean aged 26 at time of arrest, was charged for trafficking in 253g of methamphetamine. That case is currently before the Courts.
4. Immigration records showed that the 56-year-old man had been out of Singapore since 19 November 2018. CNB reached out to its foreign counterparts for information on his whereabouts.
5. The 56-year-old man was arrested by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) on 31 March 2023 and handed over to CNB on 16 April 2023.
6. In expressing appreciation to the NCID/RMP, SAC Leon Chan, Deputy Director of CNB for Operations, said:
“The trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs is a transnational problem that requires the close cooperation of the international law enforcement community. Drug traffickers thinking to evade Singaporean law enforcement by hiding overseas will find that there is no safe haven. CNB and NCID/RMP enjoy a close working relationship, as we work towards the common aim of keeping both our countries free from the scourge of drugs. We thank our Malaysian counterparts for the cooperation to bring the suspect back to Singapore to face the law.”
7. The 56-year-old man will be charged in court on 17 Apr 2023 for drug trafficking in relation to the case involving the 26-year-old. If convicted, he may face the death penalty.
