A Brief History of the

Central Narcotics Bureau

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) was established in 1971 as the primary drug enforcement agency entrusted with the responsibilities of coordinating all matters pertaining to drug eradication. In 1994, the “Committee to Improve the Drug Situation in Singapore” was set up to look into the drug situation and it recommended a total and integrated approach to deal with the drug problem.

The four main strategies are Preventive Drug Education, Rigorous Enforcement, Treatment and Rehabilitation for addicts, and finally, Aftercare and Continued Rehabilitation for ex-addicts to reintegrate them into society. CNB took on the responsibility of preventive drug education in addition to drug enforcement.

We collaborate with our Home Team, as well as local and international partners, to stem the flow of drugs into and within Singapore.

EDUCATE

CNB supports preventative education programmes in schools, tertiary educational establishments and workplaces to create an informed community. Where there is awareness of the danger of drugs, the community can help us achieve a drug-free Singapore.

ENGAGE

CNB supports programmes designed to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts and provide them ongoing aftercare and rehabilitation so that they may reintegrate into society. We work actively with the local community to garner strong societal support to create a drug-free Singapore.

We also work with like-minded international partners to uphold the international space for a zero tolerance approach to drug abuse.
